It’s Lonely out on Revis Island

December 1, 2009
by dknyj

It’s becoming very clear that Darelle Revis is the NFL’s top shut-down corner.  After a stellar performance on Sunday holding Carolina’s Steve Smith to 1 catch for 5 yards, intercepting 2 passes, one returned for a TD – It’s getting very lonely out on Revis Island for opponent’s top WR’s.

Here are the numbers for the WR’s Revis has matched up against this year. ..

Week Opponent Top WR Rec Yrds TD
1 Houston A. Johnson 4 35 0
2 New England R. Moss 4 24 0
3 Tennesee K. Britt 4 59 0
4 New Orleands M. Colston 2 33 0
5 Miami T. Ginn 2 57 1
6 Buffalo T. Owens 2 13 0
7 Oakland L. Murphy 4 58 0
8 Miami D. Bess 4 18 0
9 BYE
10 Jacksonville M Simms-Walker 3 49 1
11 New England R. Moss 5 34 1
12 Carolina S. Smith 1 5 0
35 385 3

***Update – Revis switched to Simms-Walker in second half – TD was not on him. (Thanks to Manish Mehta for this.)

These numbers alone are impressive to say the least, but keep in mind they may even better than they appear.  Revis does not cover the same WR on every play, the Jets play a little zone now and then, and then there are plays like the 50+ yard Ted Ginn TD play in week 5 where Revis was supposed to have over-the-top support from Kerry Rhodes.

JFTD Sunday Matchup – Buffalo Bills

October 18, 2009
by dknyj

kris-jenkinsAs a lot of you probably heard this week, Rex Ryan called this week a must win for the Jets. I don’t know if it’s a “Must Win,” but I do know that Jets are mad as hell that they lost on Monday night and they are going to take it all out on the hapless Bills.

The weather should play a major factor in today’s game and if the Jets can’t establish the run, it could get ugly. It will be interesting to see how the California kid Mark Sanchez handles a cold, wet football – another reason the Jets need to run the ball today. It would be nice to see a few more deep balls to LeBraylon, but Sachez has to get Dustin Keller involved and spread the ball effectively until he learns to look effectively look off safeties.

QB’s – JETS

Here is some deep analysis for you – Trent Edwards sucks.

RBs – Tie

Fred Jackson and Marshawn Lynch are dangerous especially catching the ball out of the backfield. If the Jets can shut down the outlet passes and force Edwards to throw down the field into pressure, we could see some INT’s for the D.

WRs – Bills

With Cotchery and Brad Smith out, we have to give the nod to Bills here. Yes T.O. is older and slower, but he is still dangerous. Lee Evans can make plays, if Edwards can get him the ball. We’ll need to see some consistency out of Braylon Edwards before we will bestow the power of carrying a whole receiving core on his own in the Matchups.

TE’s – JETS

Unless Jay Reimersma suits up with Jim Kelly behind center, Dustin Keller gets the nod here.

O-Line – JETS

The Jets O-line hasn’t been dominate like we all thought, but the Bills line is just not good. Remember Kris Jenkins last year against Buffalo? Well Buffalo drafted a Center to help deal with him. It probably won’t help.

Defense – JETS

It’s hard to give praise to the Defense after last week, but the fact is, if they come off blocks and do what they are supposed to do, they are one of the best in the NFL.

KEY TO THE GAME

The Key match-up this week is the Jets Run Defense vs. the Bills Running game. After a poor showing last week, they need to pick it and stuff the Run game in a cold, wet weather matchup. If they can do that and force Trent Edwards to throw, it could be a long afternoon for the Buffalo Bills.

JFTD prediction

The weather should keep this one close in the first half, but the Jets will pull away.

Humble Pie and Free Passes

October 15, 2009

RexpieOkay, coming into this season, we here at JFTD, like the rest of you had some expectations set for this team. Within those expectations, were 2 Free passes. The first one, we will hand out to Mr. Sanchez for his “Ugly Rookie Mistake Game Free Pass” against the Saints. The second, along with a large slice of humble pie, we are serving out the “Rookie Head Coach Free Pass” for his poor performance against the Dolphins.

In my mind, I feel very strongly that poor coaching played a big part in the loss on Monday Night. There were 2 glaring mistakes that stood out.

#1 – When it mattered most, Rex Ryan refuses to change personal to stop the run. The funny part about this, is he actually did in the 3rd Quarter when they played a “Bear” defense with an extra D – Lineman – and it actually worked. However in the 4th quarter, he was attempting to stop an offense that included 5 O-Lineman, 2 TE’s, a Very good blocking FB, a Very good Blocking RB (Cobbs) and 2 strong and powerful workhorse running backs in Brown and Williams. I can’t for the life of me understand why he didn’t take out Jim Leonard and put in an extra D lineman or Linebacker. As much as we love little Jimmie, he is not blowing up a block from anyone on the field in the Dolphins Wildcat formation. We needed more beef and penetration up front to support our LB’s who were getting blown off the ball consistently, and Rex stubbornly played a 3-4 or 4-3 base most of the fourth quarter.

#2 – Take a freaking Defensive Timeout. Now there has been a ton of criticism of Rex not using his timeouts, but more for not saving time for the Jets to go down the field and try and win the game after a Miami score. I feel like on big 3rd downs, he should have taken a good look at the package Miami put out there, called a time out and forced them to think about doing something else and ensuring that he can Sub in the right package he had prepared for it. I hate to say it, but there is certain coach up in New England who does this all the time and how has it worked out for him? He knows that with all the formations and personnel changes these days, it pays to take your time and make sure you have the right defense on the field to win a big down late in the game.

Now I can only give this free pass if good ole’ Rex is willing to learn from it. The greatest fear is that his over confidence in his defense will prevent him from making good coaching decisions in the future. The Jets D got served some humble pie big time in Monday night, it’s going to take a few games, especially the Nov. 1st game against Miami… to see if they actually eat it.

JFTD Monday Matchup – Miami Dolphins

October 12, 2009
by dknyj

Miami+Dolphins+v+New+York+Jets+pN-R-U1uGh8lIt’s make or break time for the Jets.  We could all see it coming, and were just hoping we could get through those first 4 games 2-2.  Heck, I even read and heard some fans would have been happy with 1-3!  But alas my friends, here we sit at a rosey colored 3-1 and…wait… can you see it ahead…?  The soft part of the schedule is upon us!

I think we keep our passionate fandom focused just on this season, it is perfectly acceptable to be excited about this part of the schedule – MIA, BUF, OAK, MIA, JAX – 5 very winnable games for our team.  But you and I both know we can’t shake the sheer terror of last year’s collapse and losses to very bad teams.   Will we be able to take care of business this year?

And so here we sit, a Monday night matchup-up to start it off against the Dolphins.   I have watched a couple of games this year the Dolphins have played, and their running game is tough to handle.  Even though they lost, they held the ball against the Colts for 47 minutes!   While our pass D has been stellar, our run D must improve.  How do we get there quickly…? -Enter Calvin Pace.  Not only is he our best 1 on 1 pass rusher, but he is stout against the run.  Vernon Gholston did a nice job filling in, but it’s obvious he can not hold the edge and come off a block like Calvin Pace.  amd_pace-manning

QB’s – JETS

We may have to give the edge to most of our competitors in this department throughout this year with our Rookie QB, but not this one.  Mark Sanchez has more starts with (4) and has shown flashes of brilliance and toughness.  Chad Henne did a good job handing the ball off last week against Buffalo, not sure how we’ll handle our aggressive D this week.

RBs – DOLPHINS

They not neccessarily have more talent  than we do, especially with Sean Greene ready to burst on the scene, but this is more award to the Fins because of their scheme.  They have evolved the wildcat a bit since introducing it against the Pats early in the season last year.  They run the QB off the field a lot this year, and they will put 4 RBs on the field to create confusion – and it has worked very well.

WRs – JETS

We will need to let Braylon Edwards play a few games before we crown him a stud, but we win this one by default.  The Fins have the opposite problem we do now, all slot guys and a very unrealiable #1 receiver in Ted Ginn.  He is a sloppy route runner with bad hands, especially at key moments in the game.  Braylon Edwards has had his share of the dropsies, but he also had 1300 yards and 16TD’s in one season – even if Cotchery can’t suit up – gotta give the edge to the Jets.

TE’s – JETS

With Braylon Edwards running deeper routes, this could be the start of something big for Dustin Keller.  Anthony Fason is a nice player, but he’s a slow block-first Tight End.  Keller has improved his blocking and is a dangerous weapon ready to explode.

O-Line – JETS

With Jake Long’s recent struggles at LT, the Dolphins could be in for a long night of blitzing off the strong side from LB’s Calvin Pace and Bart Scott.  John Abraham absolutely RAN OVER him a few weeks back and he also showed signs of weakness in speed rushers against the Colts.  While our O-Line has played well below our standards, edge goes here to the Jets who are just more consistant at this point then the Fins line.

Defense – JETS

Can’t argue with this one – with a young secondary and over-confident, loud mouth line backing core the Fins D could be in for a long night.  The Jets have shown they can stop the run and are stellar against the pass.  This is the first time this season they are getting a crack at an inexperienced QB and their mouths must be watering.

KEY TO THE GAME

The Key Match Up in this game is NT Kris Jenkins vs. The Miami Run game.  A key part to the wildcat is the counter and the dive, and if Jenkins can shut down the middle, the Jets will be ready on the outside.  I also expect Rex to move Jenkins around, especially when the Fins line up with their Unbalanced line Wildcat set.  They take their LT and move him over to the Right side and he lines up outside the RT.  More beef on one side.  Stick Jenkins in between them and you will force them to double team him, taking away the effectiveness of having your two big Tackles right next to each other.   It won’t be an easy task but if the Jets stop the run and force the dolphins to Pass, we could see turnover city and a possible easy victory for the Jets.

JFTD prediction

It will take a while to grab the lead, but when we do, there will be no turning back.

Jets Acquire Braylon Edwards

October 7, 2009
by dknyj

Adam Shefter of ESPN reported this morning that the New York Jets have acquired WR Braylon Edwards from the Cleveland Browns.   The Jets have reportedly given up WR Chansi Stuckey,  Special Teams Maven/LB Jason Trusnik and possibly their 3rd and 5th round 2010 draft picks.

Analysisedwards-6166

This is a total Risk/Reward trade.  With Edwards recent off the field issues (trying to fight LeBron James’ posse) and recent on the field performance issues (Remember Justin McCareins?  Gulp…) this is a bit risky.  But what do we have to lose?  We aren’t giving up impact, irreplaceable players in Stuckey and Trusnik, and hey, we now have a stellar, stable defense here.  This allows us to take some risks here on Offense with Personnel moves.

And for those people who are drawing comparisons to Plaxico?   C’mon – there is a difference between a Diva and a Thug.  Diva’s get bad press, Thugs get boyfriends during incarceration.   I would put Braylon in the Diva category, if he was a thug that fight the othernight would have gotten a lot uglier.

So… looking pass the risk the possibility of a big reward has got to get you excited as a Jets fan.  In 2007, he had 1300 yards and 16 Touchdowns… Did you hear that?  That is 16 TD’s in one year.  That’s hard to do, here is a list of WR’s who have scored more than 15 TD’s in a season…

Randy Moss

Jerry Rice

Sterling Sharpe

Mark Clayton

Don Hutson

Elroy Hirsch

Bill Groman

Carl Pickens

Cris Carter

Art Powell

Terrell Owens

Muhsin Muhammad

Braylon Edwards

He is 1 of 13 Guys to score more than 16 TD’s in a season – and held amongst mostly hall of famers!  This guy’s ceiling is very, very high.   It will take a few weeks for him to learn the offense, etc… but I’m hopeful just running him deep will force safeties to stay out of the box and open up the run game, and take the pressure off of our young QB.

JFTD Sunday Match Up – New Olreans Saints

October 4, 2009
by dknyj

Today’s game should be highly entertaining on both sides of the ball, but where do we have the edge?  Here is how I feel both teams match up…

QB’s – SAINTS20091002_sanchezbrees_560x375

Obviously Drew Brees is playing as good, if not better than all QB’s in the NFL, gotta give them the edge here.  Keep in mind that Sanchez is bound to make some mistakes this year, but he has shown the uncanny ability to make the big play.

RBs – TIE

I put Leon Washington up there with any running back in the NFL not named Peterson.  The key is if the Jets can finally get him the 20+ touches he deserves, I say today is the day – big game for #29.   That being said, Thomas Jones could be the key to the game today, if the Jets can pound the rock, control the clock – they will be putting themselves in a position to win.  Pierre Thomas looked pretty good last week coming back from the injury, and Reggie Bush’s ability as a receiver makes him scary.

WRs – SAINTS

The Jets inexplicably did not draft Marques Colston out of Hofstra as the Saints snatched him up in the 7th round.  Colston, Hendersen and the always dangerous Lance Moore (10TD’s in 2008) give the Saints a dynamic passing game.  Jerricho Cotchery has become Sanchez’s go to guy, but look for him to spread the ball around and don’t be surprised to see David Clowney go from the “Twitter Dog House” to  “Take it to the House” which would be a be a new wrinkle for Schottenheimer.

TE’s – JETS

This could be a break out week for Dustin Keller as he causes match-up nightmares for opposing defenses.  I would love to see him on the field with Clowney and Leon to give the Jets a more dynamic offense this week.  Shockey has caught some TD’s but he isn’t what he used to be.

O-Line – JETS

This could be the key to the game.  The Saints have their 3rd String LT in the game and look for Rex to blitz the crap out of that side.  The O-Line has been criticized heavily last week, they will be playing with a chip on their shoulder for sure.   If the Jets O-Line outplays the Saints significantly, the Jets should win this game.

Defense – JETS

The Jets attacking style has yet to be burned and this could be the first week.  The key is if Rex Ryan is able to protect Dwight Lowery and Drew Coleman in the secondary.  Otherwise you will be seeing  Hendersen and  Moore have big, big games.   Last year a huge problem for us was the 3rd WR, if we can’t solve it today, it could be a long day.   The Saints run game has been averaging 5 yards per carry, look for Kris Jenkins and company to shut it down and make them one dimensional.  The problem is one dimensional includes Drew Brees, the Jets need to get to him and force turnovers in order to win this game.

KEY TO THE GAME

This game will rest on the Jets Running Game.  If they can run the ball effectively, control the clock and keep the defense rested and ready to attack Brees, they could be sitting at 4-0 come Monday morning.

Do We Have Ourselves a #1 Receiver?

October 2, 2009

No number 1 receiver you say?  After 3 games the numbers don’t lie.

Jerricho Cotchery quietly went about his business through the off-season, training camp, etc… working hard to ensure he takes advantage of the opportunity to be a real #1 receiver.   He chose to ignore the vast amount of critics, WR trade rumors and Tannenbaum stone turning and has gone out and is in the process of proving he is that go to guy the Jets so desperately need.  While it has only been 3 games, JC hasn’t had less than 87 yards in all three games – a model of consistency.

The numbers don’t lie, 3 Games - 18 Catches, 285 Yards, 1 TD…

Here is where he ranks in the NFL statistically after 3 games in several vital WR statistics:

Receiving Yards – 3rd

Yards per Game – 3rd (amongst WR’s who have played in all 3 games)

20+ Yard receptions – tied for 2nd

40+ Yard receptions – tied for 2nd

1st Downs – tied for 1st

Receptions – 5th (amongst WR’s)

I don’t know about you, but this looks like a #1 receiver to me.   Again, it’s only been 3 games, but it’s pretty apparent the media has not respected Cotchery with all the offseason rumor mongering and Brandon Marshall talk.  He is ultra tough, has great hands, runs superb routes and is not a Diva.  I’ll take him anyday over Brandon Marshall, who hasn’t shown up in any of those categories this year.  The Media haven’t taken notice of his production in the first 3 games and haven’t written much giving him praise and maybe suggesting, “hey, maybe this guy is a legit #1 receiver – we were wrong!”

Listen, We all know he does not have the physical attribues of a Larry Fitzgerald or Andre Johnson, but you can’t tell me he can’t be a top 10 receiver in this leage if he keeps this pace up can you?
